Focus Learning Areas this Term:

Topic - Our topic for the term is “Ko wai au - ko wai tātou? Who am I - who are we?” Students will experience a range of opportunities to explore their own cultural identity and what is important to them and their families as well as to their classmates.

Health & PE - As long as the weather remains warm enough, classes will swim at least 3 times per week. Your child’s teacher will inform you of the relevant days - please send named togs and a towel in a plastic bag with your child.

Maths - Our Maths focus for the first three weeks of the term will be statistics. Students will be sorting, counting, displaying and discussing data about everyday objects. For the rest of the term, students will work in groups and will be focusing on adding and subtracting sets of objects.

Literacy - Your child will come home with their book bag everyday. It is important that he or she reads for at least 15 minutes every day. This does not have to be a book from school - it is great if your child reads a wide variety of texts they enjoy. Here are some ways to make reading a positive experience:

  • Have your child read the book to you or share the reading with your child, taking turns,
  • Talk about the story, ask questions about what happened..
  • Read the story in your first language. We also have bilingual Pasifika books available that your child can take home, please see your child’s teacher if you would like to borrow these.
  • Encourage, stay POSITIVE and CELEBRATE your child’s progress and effort in reading.
  • Some children may bring home specific words they need to learn to read and/or spell. Please see your classroom teacher if you want ideas about how to support them..

Your child’s teacher will share further information that is specific to their class shortly. Please see your child’s teacher if you have any questions or concerns or see Kathryn Arbon at the office. We look forward to getting to know your child and an exciting year of learning together!
